Victoria Cup: Hannon and Haggas confident in 27 runner showdown

William Haggas insists he is more confident of a good run in the Victoria Cup, in 20-1 outsider Squats over favourite Fastnet Tempest

Last season Squats posted some good efforts at this track, including a second place finish in the International.

The five-year-old was last seen finishing third at this track in a similar handicap, and is fancied to finally go one better to take a big field handicap.

“We know Squats will run well at the track, he always does,” said Haggas.

“He loves it at Ascot, and the conditions should be fine. I’m sure he will run a good race.”

Fastnet Tempest posted a great effort when third in the Spring Cup, and there is plenty of optimism now switched down a furlong.

The four-year-old was a two time winner last year, and is on a very nice mark.

“He ran really well at Newbury last time out,” said the Newmarker-based handler.

“We believe he’s got plenty of speed so dropping back down in trip should be fine. I hope he’ll be alright for us as well.”

It’s only a month before the start of Royal Ascot, HTF will have previews and tips all week.

Meanwhile Richard Hannon is expecting George William to go ‘very close’.

The four-year-old was last seen finishing fourth in a similar handicap at Newbury, but was unlucky in running.

The handicapper only raised him 1lb for that tremendous effort.

“He appears in great form this year, winning at Nottingham on his reappearance and was very unlucky last time at Newbury,” said Hannon.

“He still looks to have a bit in hand and I am hopeful with the right run he can finish very close.”
